幻觉症是一种心理状况，其特征在于无法自愿可视化心理意象。许多患有幻觉障碍的人还报告说他们无法回忆起声音，气味或触觉。一些人还报告了更年期，即无法识别面部。

弗朗西斯·高尔顿（Francis Galton）于1880年首次描述了这种现象，但此后至今仍未研究。在埃克塞特大学亚当·泽曼教授领导的研究小组于2015年发表的一项研究发表后，人们对该现象再次产生了兴趣。对该病的研究仍很少。

历史
弗朗西斯·高尔顿（Francis Galton）于1880年在有关精神意象的统计研究中首次描述了这一现象，并将其描述为他的同伴之间的一种普遍现象。但是，直到2005年MX找来了埃克塞特大学的Adam Zeman教授之前，这个问题基本上还没有得到研究。MX在经过小手术后似乎已经失去了可视化的能力。在MX案例于2010年发布后，许多人报告说Zeman终生无法可视化。 2015年，Zeman的团队发表了一篇关于他们所谓的“先天性幻觉性幻觉”的论文，引起了人们对该现象的重新关注，该现象现在被简称为“幻觉性幻觉”。

评定
在亚当·泽曼（Adam Zeman）教授的原始论文中，视觉影像问卷的生动程度（VVIQ）用于评估21位自我诊断和自我选择的参与者的心理影像质量。这份问卷邀请该人员对一系列图像进行可视化处理（从亲戚，朝阳，他们认识的商店等），并对图像的生动程度进行分级，从“完全清晰生动的视线”（5分）到“一点都没有图像，您只知道您在思考该对象”（1分）。如果他们在16个问题中的总得分不超过20，则被归类为幻觉。

研究
Zeman的论文指出，幻觉症仅表现出自愿的视觉形象。幻觉症患者仍然能够进行非自愿的可视化（即梦）。

另一项研究认为，正面参与驱动反馈连接可以激活视觉皮层中的感觉表征。患有幻觉障碍的人可能缺乏这些反馈连接，从而无法激活视觉皮层以产生图像。

2020年的一项研究得出的结论是，经历幻觉症的人在其他意义上的图像也有所减少，自传的记忆也较少。

除先天性幻觉外，还有因脑损伤或心理原因导致获得性幻象的案例。

皮克斯（Pixar）联合创始人，沃尔特·迪斯尼动画工作室（Walt Disney Animation Studios）前总裁埃德·卡特穆尔（Ed Catmull）。卡特姆（Catmull）对皮克斯（Pixar）的540位同事进行了心理可视化调查，发现制作经理往往比艺术家更具有可视化效果。
